Orange Beach, Ala. - Foodies and culinary masters of all skill levels are invited to the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber’s (CABC) 2nd Annual Coastal Tailgate Cook-Off Challenge at The Wharf’s Marina Lawn (in-between the Levin’s Bend condominium and the Orange Beach Event Center) on Saturday, Aug. 24.

The event, a fundraiser for the Chamber’s education programs, gives attendees the opportunity to sample foods (featuring bacon in a starring role) from some of the best professional and amateur cooking teams/individuals in the Southeast region. Competitors will be gunning for a coveted Golden Ticket to compete in the bacon category at the World Food Championships (WFC) in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Inaugural Tailgate Challenge saw 300+ attendees come out to support twenty teams tasked with putting together their best tailgate themed dishes. Teams led by Tennessee based chef Geoff Maynard claimed the first and second place spots. Maynard, who had won another Golden Ticket the week prior to the Tailgate Challenge, awarded his ticket to third place finisher Maegan Bratton, co-owner of Gulf Shores based Cowbell Rolled Ice Cream. Bratton would go on to place eighth overall in the seafood category, while Maynard placed third in the live fire category at the 2023 WFC in Dallas, Texas.

On getting the nod to go to Dallas, Bratton said, "I had been involved with the WFC on a volunteer level for many years, but never had the opportunity to compete in the event. It was incredible to be on the other side of the table alongside my husband Greg. [It was] truly a dream come true."

Last year’s event saw triple digit temperatures hit the Coastal Alabama area, but organizers say they are ready to ensure the comfort of competitors, attendees, and volunteers. Covered seating areas with tables, fans, and sunscreen will be available.

There are three ways to get involved with the 2nd annual event:
