Baldwin County, Alabama – The Baldwin County Commission was formally presented with a partnership agreement with Airbus that will provide science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning opportunities for Baldwin County students via Flight Works Alabama.

In support of the continued growth of the aerospace industry in the coastal Alabama region, Airbus, the State of Alabama, the Baldwin County Commission, and others have committed to support Flight Works Alabama in designing, constructing, and equipping their new facility, which is located at Brookley Aeroplex.

Baldwin County Commission Chair Billie Jo Underwood shared the following statement about the agreement with Airbus -- “Investing in this partnership with Airbus represents an investment in Baldwin County’s future. We are proud to support the growing field of aviation and look forward to the exciting opportunities that Airbus and the industry will provide for our citizens, especially Baldwin County students. Our commitment will help to grow our workforce and will open the door to a career path that may not otherwise be available. I look forward to supporting this agreement.”

Featuring an exhibition area, classrooms, workshop space, traveling exhibitions, and other educational amenities, Flight Works Alabama will celebrate the past, present, and future of aviation and innovation in the coastal Alabama area and educate multiple generations of students through hands-on, aviation-themed experiences, activities, and educational programs. Daryl Taylor, Vice President and General Manager of the Airbus U.S. Manufacturing Facility in Mobile, said, “We are pleased that Baldwin County plans to invest in aerospace and future workforce development. The county will join an elite list of industry, education and community partners who are coming together to bolster Alabama’s workforce development efforts and inspire young people to pursue careers in aerospace. We look forward to working together as Airbus continues to grow in the Gulf Coast region.”

With the addition of the A220 final assembly line at the Brookley Aeroplex manufacturing facility, Airbus continues to grow its footprint in the coastal Alabama region. This agreement with the Baldwin County Commission will support Airbus in its efforts to encourage students to pursue a career in the aerospace industry, increasing student awareness through educational programming.

As a part of the agreement between Airbus and the Baldwin County Commission, Flight Works Alabama is committing to invite 50 10th grade STEM students from each high school in Baldwin County to participate in a day of hands-on learning at Flight Works Alabama and the Airbus final assembly line. The agreement will also allow all of Baldwin County’s 11th grade students to apply for FlightPath9, which provides selected students an opportunity to participate in an aviation training and industry certification program for a total of 200 hours of instruction. After completing FlightPath9, a student will be prepared to enter Airbus’ Fast Track job training program which will directly support workforce development in Baldwin County.

Flight Works Alabama will also provide professional development training for STEM teachers throughout Baldwin County’s middle and high schools and partner with Baldwin County to provide guidance on future workforce development programming.
