Job Description
South Shore Insurance Companies is currently seeking to fill the position of Staff Accountant. SSI Companies operates a locally owned and operated MGA (Managing General Agent) and independent insurance agency serving the personal and small business insurance needs of customers along the Gulf Coast.

The candidate for this position should be team oriented, but a self-starter, and present themselves with integrity and professionalism, be a clear communicator with a customer-focused orientation. Business knowledge, critical thinking skills and financial understanding are paramount to this position. This candidate will be willing to learn new skills quickly and thoroughly with the goal of advancement and both personal and professional growth. Hours:       Full time (40 hours per week); Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm CT.
Location:   Corporate Office in Foley AL
Training:    All training will occur in a paid, full-time work environment with specific goals set during the training                   period. All employment will begin with a 90-day trial period.
Benefits:    Salary Range $32,000 – $40,000 DOE with full benefits package available including employee paid                    health insurance, Matching IRA, paid holidays and leave

The duties and responsibilities of this job are subject to change and employees will be required to perform the new duties and responsibilities.
Responsible for maintaining Accounts Receivable and/or Accounts Payable of one or a combination of accounting systems. Prepare journal entries, maintain, and reconcile complex ledger accounts. Assist with balance sheet, cash flow and income statement preparation.
Responsibilities / Duties
General Accounting Functions, including but not limited to:
  • Maintain Accounts Receivable and/or Accounts Payable
  • Work closely with various departments of business
  • Prepare and record monthly journal entries.
  • Assist with bank reconciliations
  • Reconcile various balance sheet accounts for SSIU.
  • Close out accounting periods within AMS and ALIS.
  • Prepare various analyses for SSIU on a monthly and quarterly basis.
  • Other various tasks as assigned
Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties)

Bachelors Degree with an Accounting emphasis preferred

A minimum of 3 years of experience is preferred. Experience with accounting systems, reading and interpreting financial statements, analyzing issues, defining problems, processing transactions in a timely and consistent manner, and adhering to generally accepted accounting principles is required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Technically proficient with respect to understanding of U.S. GAAP.
  • Ability to work independently and with little guidance management is necessary. 
  • Should be flexible and able to switch quickly from one project to another when dictated by business need. 
  • A willingness to put forth additional effort and work extra hours when critical projects arise as well as availability to communicate with people in different time zones are important.  A positive, can-do attitude is expected. 
  • Selects appropriate means of communication; questions to seek clarification and understanding.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Listens actively to others; conveys appropriate information to others.
