Summary of Position:
The Senior Accountant position reports to the Chief Financial Officer, but the employee is expected to function in a proficient and independent manner in carrying out of the accounting for his or her assigned areas.  Personal contact includes staff from within the Zoo and others such as trustees, Board members, and auditors, to provide or obtain financial information and to resolve problems or issues.  The position will deal with vendor, bank and bond accounts as well as handle internal operating accounts of the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo.  The Senior Accountant will perform a variety of fiscal accounting tasks in accordance with established regulations and accounting practices and principles including maintenance of accounts payable, daily sales, donor records, accounting records, payroll, leave accruals, and will assist with the preparation and analysis of various financial reports.  This is a great opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join our growing Zoo operations.
•     Manages sales deposits of incoming funds entry from all customer payment systems including but not limited to F&B POS, Ideal, PayPal,, Brown Paper Tickets, Arrive, etc. and ensures timely entry of daily receipts to proper accounts andtransfers as necessary between depositories.
•     Prepares monthly sales tax reporting.
•     Maintain a calendar of receipts due to the Zoo and perform accounts receivable functions to include researching any discrepancy or problem and making necessary corrections to the appropriate account(s) and notify supervisor accordingly.
•     Perform accounts payable functions to include vendor relations, maintaining all W-9s, researching any discrepancy or problem, insuring receipt of any credits due to the Zoo, and making necessary corrections to the appropriate account(s) and notify supervisor accordingly.
•     Reviews accounts payable weekly and schedules vendor payments ensuring payment is received for outstanding credit; generally responding to all vendor inquiries regarding finance
•     Prepare payroll taking necessary deductions and making reports for the payment of all payroll taxes and other payroll liabilities; maintain employee leave accounts and other payroll records.
•     Collection and deposit of vending receipts on a regular and timely basis.
•     Reviews and is responsible for construction draws/accounting.
•     With the CFO, administers the purchase card program to insure adequate documentation and support for all expenditures.
•     With the CFO, monitors and prepares annual tax abatement reporting.
•     Accurately input journal entries prepared by CFO supported by adequate documentation.
•     Assists with the preparation of financial reports for the Board monthly.
•     Assists in the preparation of the annual budget for the Zoo.
•     Assist the Chief Fiscal Officer with external audit functions (annually).
•     Assist with the filing and maintenance of the Zoo’s official records. 
•     Provide clerical accounting assistance to staff and perform other accounting duties, as assigned.
•     Provide assistance and staff support to the CFO and/or the Executive Director in any function of the Zoo as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•     Knowledge of principles, theories, and methods of accounting such as GAAP and GASB accounting principles and practices.
•     Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures relating to accounting and basic understanding of sound business management.
•     Knowledge of or ability to acquire knowledge of governmental laws, rules and regulations governing accounting activities specific to the Zoo.
•     Knowledge of eVerify, EMMA, computerized spreadsheets, databases and computerized reporting and accounting systems. 
•     Experience on Quick Books Pro is required.
•     Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel is required. 
•     Knowledge of State of Alabama Sales Tax regulations is required.
•     Construction accounting experience is a plus.
•     Ability to organize, analyze and interpret financial data to solve accounting problems.
•     Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
•     Knowledge or background in capital finance and/or bond accounting is a plus.
•     Requires the ability to work in a responsive environment where co-workers or citizens
bring problems for resolution.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in in Accounting, Finance, or related field and 4 year of related experience.  Prior payroll and accounts payable experience is preferred. Master’s Degree and/or CPA is preferred.
