The 2013 Orange Beach Billfish Classic will feature some significant changes. The format will feature tournament registration and captain's meeting Wednesday, fishing Thursday through Saturday and weigh in Friday and Saturday afternoons. The event wraps up with an awards brunch on Sunday.
According to Tournament Chairman Johnny Dorland, these changes are expected to significantly increase participation in what has become one of the most anticipated annual events on the Gulf Coast. "I'd like to personally invite everyone to come fish with us this year in the Orange Beach Billfish Classic," he says. "We'll do our best to make sure you have a terrific time from start to finish—I'm sure you won't be disappointed."
The OBBC has continued to serve as a very important fundraiser for marine conservation projects, contributing to The Billfish Foundation and the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA), both 501c3 charities. In 2011, the tournament donated over $50,000 to these groups, bringing the overall total to $500,000, a contribution supported by the tournament's all-volunteer staff sincerely dedicated to the conservation of our marine resources.
This year, a change in tournament rules will allow blue marlin to be weighed in. The minimum size for a tournament-legal blue marlin is now 103 inches. This is in addition to the all-release division for billfish and the weigh in for dolphin, tuna and wahoo.
