WINTER CONCERT SERIES AT GSUMC FEATURES FOLK MUSIC STARS JACKIE AND GARY
Written by Louise Hawley
Grammy Award winner Jackie Davidson and folk song composer Gary Brandt will be the featured artists on February 13th and 14th at the Gulf Shores United Methodist Church, 1900 Gulf Shores Parkway. Both evening performances will be at 7pm in the church sanctuary. Tickets at $10 each are available from Thee Coffee Shop in the South Campus (Winn Dixie Plaza) from 9am until noon Monday through Friday. All concert proceeds are used to support the music ministry of the church.
Jackie’s music career began early when she became a church organist at age 15, then off to college at BYU, finally moving to southern California where she joined “The Randy Sparks 3” which later became the Grammy Award winning “New Christy Minstrels”. She has sung with many well-known entertainers such as Sammy Davis Jr., Tennessee Ernie Ford, Kate Smith and Carol Channing. A career highlight was performing at the White House for President Lyndon Johnson. Appearances on TV shows and commercials also dot her resume.
Gary Brandt, a retired educator and coach, is now a full-time performer, composer and folklorist. Gary’s performing venues include TV-2 Detroit, the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Chrysler Omni Arts and his multi-media program “Land to the West”. In 2013 Gary created a new program, the “Gordon Lightfoot Tribute Concert”. He carries on the tradition of folk music with a 12-string guitar, a good song, humorous stories and a great voice that reflects the rich tradition of American folk music.
Join us at Gulf Shores United Methodist Church for two performances by Jackie and Gary on February 13th or 14th. The Friday evening show could be your great way to conclude a special Valentine’s Day with your special valentine. You are always welcome at GSUMC; call our office at 251-968-2411 or visit our website at www.gulfshoresumc.org for more information.
