Caribbean Day at OWA is a vibrant and exciting event that celebrates the rich culture and flavors of the Caribbean. Taking place in Downtown, the event offers a diverse range of activities and attractions for attendees of all ages. 

On July 22 Downtown OWA comes to life with a myriad of Caribbean-inspired activities. Vendors from the arts and crafts community set up shop throughout Downtown, offering an array of unique and handmade items for attendees to browse and purchase. The streets are transformed into an open-air gallery as registered artists participate in a captivating art competition, creating Caribbean-themed street chalk artwork. With different age categories, the competition showcases the talent and creativity of professionals, youth, and junior artists. 

Adding to the lively ambiance, Caribbean-style stilt walkers captivate the crowd as they gracefully roam through the streets, impressing guests with their colorful costumes and skillful performances. For those interested in exploring the rhythmic beats of the Caribbean, a Drum Clinic is available. Participants can register for sessions led by an instructor, where they can learn Afro-Cuban rhythms and experience the joy of playing drums. 

As the day progresses, the anticipation builds for the Art Competition Judging. A panel of expert judges evaluates the artworks to determine the winners in each age category, based on their creativity, technique, and adherence to the Caribbean theme. The climax of the event takes place on OWA Island, where the Art Competition Awards ceremony commences. Excitement fills the air as the winners are announced and rewarded with cash prizes. The amounts vary according to the category, with the top contenders in each age group receiving recognition for their exceptional artistic talents.

Whether you're browsing through the arts and crafts vendors, witnessing the live creation of street art, enjoying the captivating performances of stilt walkers, or indulging in the rhythmic beats of the drum clinic, this event offers something for everyone to enjoy and celebrate the spirit of the Caribbean. 

 

Schedule of events 

Friday, July 21 

Early Vendor Check-In: 

  • Time: 4:00pm-6:00pm 

  • Location: Flag Entrance 

  • Description: Approved vendors can check in early to set up their booths. They will receive their booth number, WiFi information, and submit any required paperwork. 

Saturday, July 22 

Vendor Check-In: 

  • Time: 2:00pm-3:00pm 

  • Location: Flag Entrance 

  • Description: Vendors check in and set up their booths throughout Downtown. They will be assigned a booth number, given WiFi information, and submit any required paperwork. 

Artist Check-In: 

  • Time: 3:00pm-4:00pm 

  • Location: Flag Entrance 

  • Description: Artists selected to participate in the art competition check in and are directed to their designated spaces in Downtown. They must submit any required paperwork at this time. 

Art Competition: 

  • Time: 4:00pm-7:00pm 

  • Location: Downtown 

  • Description: Registered artists create Caribbean-themed street chalk artwork throughout Downtown. There are different age categories: Pro (18+ years old), Youth (10-17 years old), and Junior (4-9 years old). 

Arts & Crafts Vendors: 

  • Time: 4:00pm-9:00pm 

  • Location: Downtown 

  • Description: Various arts and crafts vendors set up their stalls throughout Downtown, offering their creative products. 

TBD Stilt Walkers: 

  • Time: 5:00pm-8:00pm 

  • Location: Downtown 

  • Description: Caribbean-style stilt walkers entertain attendees as they roam through Downtown. 

TBD Drum Clinic: 

  • Time: 5:00pm-8:00pm 

  • Location: Cinnabon/Rum Island nook 

  • Description: Drum clinic registration begins at 5:00pm. Each 20-minute session can accommodate up to 12 registrants. Participants will learn Afro-Cuban rhythm from an instructor. 

Arts & Crafts Vendors: 

  • Time: 4:00pm-9:00pm 

  • Location: Downtown 

  • Description: Arts and crafts vendors continue to showcase and sell their products throughout Downtown. 

Art Competition Judging: 

  • Time: 7:00pm-8:00pm 

  • Location: Downtown 

  • Description: A panel of judges evaluates the art competition entries to determine the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each age category. 

Art Competition Awards: 

  • Time: 8:00pm-until 

  • Location: Island Stage 

  • Description: The winners of the art competition are announced and awarded cash prizes. The prize amounts vary based on the age categories: Pro, Youth, and Junior. 

Art Competition Prizes 

Pro Category: 

  • 1st Place: $500 cash 

  • 2nd Place: $400 cash 

  • 3rd Place: $300 cash 

Youth Category: 

  • 1st Place: $300 cash 

  • 2nd Place: $200 cash 

  • 3rd Place: $100 cash 

Junior Category: 

  • 1st Place: $100 cash 

  • 2nd Place: $75 cash 

  • 3rd Place: $50 cash
